		<description>
Our unit on weather is off to a great start. The students seem to be learning the challenging vocabulary. During this unit we will learn about the different types of weather, meteorologists, four types of clouds, and the water cycle. We will also learn how to research the temperature and read a thermometer. There are many wonderful stories we will be reading during this unit along with non-fiction books to help us gather facts about weather. Our unit song is called The Weather Dude . Your child may come home singing this very soon! We will become scientists as we work on 2 experiments during this unit. Below is a list of some of the vocabulary we will learn.

condensation evaporation precipitation water cycle atmosphere anemometer humid thunderstorm lightning temperature thermometer

Please contact me if you have any questions! I'm looking forward to a great unit!

		<title>Movie Night, Homework, Behavior Calendars</title>
		<link>http://captaincrowe.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=58</link>
		<description>
Another week down and the students seem like they've been in first grade for months. I am so proud of how well they have adapted to a new environment.

We were all very disappointed that movie night was cancelled due to the weather but I am excited to say it has been rescheduled for Friday, September 12th. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for the fun.

 Homework officially begins this week. Please help your child remember to bring their book to school each day for our guided reading lesson. Homework should not take longer than 20 minutes. If it is consistantly taking longer, I will adjust it for your child. Your child has daily homework however it is not due until Friday.

Daily behavior is marked on your child's behavior calendar. Please initial on the day each night. If there is no mark for that day your child displayed good behavior all day. If there is a letter code, your child was reminded 3 times and the folder was marked on the fourth. There is a sticker on the binder (behind the calendar) that explains the letter codes.

 A phonics pretest will be given on Monday to determine which students need a more challenging list of words. If you child makes a 100 on the pretest, he/she will be given an enrichment list. These are words that go along with our unit theme or upcoming unit theme. The enrichment words are not graded. They are for challenging practice.

I look forward to another exciting week. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email or you can call the school.

		<title>Great First Week</title>
		<link>http://captaincrowe.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=56</link>
		<description>
WOW! One week down and we are off to a great start. This week our focus was on classroom procedures and routines. Everyone did a nice job following the rules and learning the ropes of first grade. We will continue to work on classroom skills such as; not talking out, staying in the assigned location, raising hands, and for a teacher. Beginning of the year assessments are complete and guided reading will begin on Monday. Your child will have a book in his/her binder each night. Listen to your child read the story at least once during the week. Please make sure your child brings the book to school each day as we will be using it during guided reading daily. Check out Marvelous Math in the Explorers Zone to find out what is happening in math this week. Don't forget school pictures will be taken this Wednesday. I look forward to a great year!!
